Melting Our Mark

Art Concepts in Focus When Melting Our Marks :
  1. Color Theory & Color Mixing
  2. Positive & Negative Space
  3. Compostion
For Valentine's Day in Art 3 students were allowed to create a very non-traditional crayon artwork. This artwork was inspired by many similar artworks my students and I had seen and Pinned on our Pinterest, "Things To Create" Boards. You may be asking yourself, "What is Pinterest?" Well, http://www.pinterest.com/ is an artist's best friend and a virtual pinboard, I use with students to help them find their inspirations for art creation.  Pinterest is an artist's playground.  A place to look, like, and learn.  If you haven't checked it out now is the time. (Please read below for more information on this website.)

Instead of using crayons in the traditional way to make a mark on the page; we used crayons, and hair dryers or heat guns to MELT our mark!

Students were reminded of the importance of positive and negative space to help insure there was more than just dripping wax color.  Here is a how-to link to help you get started: http://www.craftbits.com/project/crayon-melting-artwork.

Basic color theory was revisited- if you melt a red crayon next to a blue one you will get a purple stream of wax. We practiced a couple of times melting with old crayon peices, then the students were off to create their masterpieces.
This is a great project for middle and high school art areas.

This is a symbol for one of my students that has had cancer.  She has this tatooed on her wrist. Art with personal meaning and significance is always a good option for subject matter.
