Recently my Art 3 student had the opportunity to speak with a working comic book illustrator and author, Stephen McCraine of Mal and Chad via Skype. http://malandchad.com.
Skype is a wonderful resource, that allows for visits via the internet and a webcam with experts in your own classroom. This was the first Skype experience for all of my students. Skype is a great real world tool for students to access experts and grow their ability fo global communication skills. Here is a link to 50 other ideas for Skype in the classroom via Edudemic.com: http://edudemic.com/2012/11/online-colleges-50-creative-ways-to-use-skype-in-the-classroom/
Mr. McCraine shared with us the steps for writing a comic or novel. He also shared with us a live drawing of a comic and narrative we "created" together. Students had a Q&A, learned and were inspired to write their own autobiographical comic narratives. Below is a narrative created by one of my students.
